Deliverables

Our objectives were threefold:

  1. Design a desktop application for multiple user types and permission levels that ingests data in a usable and accessible way but also allows for a large amount of information to be collected
  2. Ensure data ingested is capable of producing valuable reporting and statistics based on complex needs varying for each user persona
  3. Create a robust, adaptable design system ensuring consistency and scalability for a smoother user experience on tight development timescales

Challenges

1. Grasping current complexities

Getting a handle on the intricacies of their existing system and the day-to-day operations for internal users was a complex task. We therefore hosted in-person workshops during the discovery phase to clarify processes and understand their needs.

2. Relying on assumptions for MVP

With the inability to directly engage with external users, focusing on assumptions and concentrating efforts on improving the internal user experience for the MVP became a pragmatic approach.

3. Challenges in engaging with internal users

The overwhelming workload of internal users posed a challenge, limiting the frequency of interactions and insights gathering. The solution was to get the client to see work earlier, communicate and ask questions on Teams channel and iterate with them based on their requests and needs.

4. Time constraints and agile role adaptation

Client expectations vs what we could deliver were different due to unforeseen complexities in the system. We were able to adapt and push things easily back to the backlog which got refined later on.

5. Navigating industry complexity

This required a deep understanding of industry-specific terminologies and technological nuances. We asked questions, asking why the car anatomy behaved differently etc. in addition to being proactive doing our own research into the mechanical constraints.

Tackling these multifaceted challenges demanded agility, adaptability, and a deep understanding of both user needs and industry-specific complexities.

Ideation

Proto personas and user flows

Together with the Principal UX Designer we developed proto personas and user flows, establishing a foundational understanding of user needs and behavior. These tools served as guiding frameworks throughout the design process.

Wireframing and prototyping

Leveraging these insights, we proceeded to wireframe and prototype ideas, creating tangible representations of the proposed solutions. Validation through user testing and obtaining sign-offs from internal users ensured alignment with their needs and expectations.

Design system ownership and maintenance

Taking ownership of the design system, I ensured its adherence to brand guidelines and accessibility standards. Maintaining this system allowed for consistent and efficient design application, enabling easy reuse of components and swift design iterations.

This systematic approach not only ensured that the designs resonated with user needs but also facilitated streamlined design processes, promoting consistency, efficiency, and accessibility compliance across the project.

Final Product
